The study of family has become a field of increasing researches. This work presents a report on the study of the experience on qualitative research with families from metropolitan outskirts, pointing towards a critical reflection about interviewing as a methodological instrument in comprehending this phenomenon. In light of Pierre-Bordieu’s perspective, this work approaches debates about the research that utilizes the interview, focusing psychosocial matters present in a situation in which a researcher empathizes with an interviewee. It raises the question of which are the boundaries and possibilities in the study of familial processes besides discussing power relations and inequality as well contained in the interview. It offers reinforcement to the discussion of procedures to collect data, register and transcript narratives taken from interviews of scientific investigation.
