The use of mixed methods in research has grown in several fields of knowledge. The combination of qualitative and quantitative methods affords to obtain a larger body of results in investigation approaches, with relevant advantages for complex research on Education. By minimizing the likely difficulties in combining of quantitative and qualitative investigation efforts, these studies may produce relevant results and point to promising pathways to be explored by researchers and educators. Due to the wide array of qualitative approaches and to the possibilities to quantify countless variables that can be analyzed in Education, there is a considerable choice of investigation pathways to be explored in research on teaching and learning processes. Therefore, the objectives of this article were to present the basic premises of mixed methods and to discuss the possible implications when they are used in investigations on Education, including the underlying aspects of theoretical domains these studies address and data collection they use. This study does not aim to present a practical recipe; on the contrary, our efforts are to discuss the problems in research practice and the possibilities to use these practices in Education.
