Understanding poetry as a decisive experience for language development in childhood, this article analyzes poetic images in children's literature, in order to contribute to the teaching and learning of reading processes. From a descriptive-analytic study, six poetic titles, selected by PNBE 2010/2012, are focused, in which the poetic image is accomplished through the use of figures of speech, featuring sound or semantic relations. The research indicates to the contributions that the intentional analysis of poetic images may provide to the development of linguistic intelligence of a child interlocutor, supporting him in the understanding of himself and of his surroundings and encouraging his education as a reader.
