Abstract

Fishing in the Amazon is an activity that is part of the life, survival, and subsistence continuity of the natives of this region. This study aimed to analyze the working conditions and labor relations of the fishing community in this region. In order to achieve our objectives, we conducted interviews with the artisanal fishermen and fisherwomen from April to June 2021, and collected data from their trade associations. Fishing is the main economic activity of the community, and is carried out by the family nucleus or as a collective effort, utilizing small boats and basic personal fishing equipemnt. Facing daily challenges in fishing, with a vunerable working class organization, interacting with fish buyers in a submissive manner, lacking of adequated support from the State, the fisherman is a "social being" who merges its existence with capitalist and non-capitalist relations of survival.
