BUDISMO ÉTNICO: MUDANÇAS E PERMANÊNCIAS RELIGIOSAS EM UM GRUPO NIKKEI

Resumo

 O presente artigo analisa o Budismo de origem étnica em Presidente Prudente (município do oeste do Estado de São Paulo) tendo em vista dados demográficos e históricos. Busca-se avaliar as tendências do Budismo no contexto de uma sociedade de forte imigração japonesa ao longo do tempo e refletir sobre as mudanças da religiosidade nikkei. Na primeira parte, conceitua-se o Budismo étnico utilizando a categoria de ‘etnicidade’. Em seguida, refaz-se a trajetória do Budismo e uma série demográfica histórica de seus adeptos em Presidente Prudente. Finalmente, examina a religiosidade nikkei com base em dados do IBGE do Censo 2000.

ETHNIC BUDDHISM: RELIGIOUS CHANGES AND CONTINUITIES IN THE NIKKEY GROUP AT PRESIDENTE PRUDENTE CITY

Abstract

 This paper analyzes the ethnic Buddhism in Presidente Prudente (western city of São Paulo State, Brazil) regarding historical and demographics data. Intends to examine the trends of Buddhism in the context of Japanese immigration to the West Paulista and the changes of the Nikkey religiosity over the time. In the first part, conceptualizes the ethnic Buddhism using the category of ‘ethnicity’. Then, retrieves the history of Buddhism and the number of its followers. Finally, examines the Nikkey religiosity based on data from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE).
