Abstract

This article presents and discusses preliminary results from a survey entitled "Professional Development of the School Manager in the Perspective of Action Research: from the representations to the reorganization of school", whose general objective is to improve the training of school managers of Board of Education of Presidente Prudente (DE/PP). The objective of this paper is to present the profile of the directors of DE / PP and identify / analyze the voice of the professionals themselves, what they think about different aspects that permeate their professional practice, their conceptions about their role, their difficulties and what they think about the democratic management in public school. It also problematizes aspects related to the formation of subjects, from documents gestated by the State Department of Education (SEE/SP) recovering thus the trajectory of training of directors. The research uses as methodogy the qualitative approach and as a procedure for data collection, documentary research and application of a questionnaire to 35 school principals. For categorization and analysis of the open questions it was used the technique of content analysis and the closed questions used the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS). As partial results, it was found that most directors values the democratic management and understands the enormous challenge that this presents for their professional performance in everyday public school. Moreover, the principals have a perception of his performance which mixes elements with emphasis on political leadership to encourage participation and democratic management with a more technical conception of their performance. About continuing education, we found that there is a marked concern for the training of managers by the SEE/SP, intensified in the last decade.
