We seek to know how the development of the psychological function of attention has been understood in the scientific scope. For this a bibliographic study was conducted in the fields of Health, Mental Health and Education. The survey prioritized areas such databases: Medline, Lilacs and SciELO, the period between 1990 and 2012. The results show a much higher number of articles that propose to approach the development of attention by its absence, constituting a condition called Attention Deficit Disorder and Hiperactivity. Even those who propose to discuss the development of attention they do, mostly, with the intention of defining periods for such development be reached. The articles incorporate the debate among the causes for the not-learning, sometimes regarded as matters of biological and genetics origin, sometimes socially produced in school relations. We resorted to the Historic-Cultural Psychology to discuss the data found in the research.
